Per the State of Michigan Tax Agreement with the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, tribal members living within the designated tax agreement area are exempt from telephone service sales and use tax.
For this exemption to occur, CenturyTel must contact the State for the list of tribal members living within the tax agreement area. This is the only way that tribal members' phone services can be tax exempt. There is no exemption certificates issued.
CenturyTel was notified in April 2003 by the State, regarding the tax agreement and the procedures to exempt resident tribal members.
The tribal tax office has been in contact with CenturyTel and the State regarding this issue and we are waiting for their response. We ask that all CenturyTel users please refrain from calling the tribal tax office at this time. The tax office will make an official announcement when the status of this issue changes.
