The following is a message from Tribal Chairman Austin Lowes:
As the Chairman of the Sault Tribe, I’ve received many messages regarding how the Trump Administration’s recent actions could impact us.
I’d like everyone to know that Sault Tribe leadership is closely monitoring the various Executive Orders issued by President Trump, along with the memoranda issued by the Office of Management and Budget, to determine their impacts to our citizens and government services. It is important to keep in mind that the situation in Washington is rapidly evolving, and the full impact of some orders may take more time before they are completely known.
Importantly, healthcare funds from the Indian Health Service were forward-funded and are not expected to be in jeopardy. While the uncertainty of other programs may be concerning, we are working diligently to have a financial plan in place should the need arise.
The tribal administration has also been working with our federal policy experts, who are accustomed to addressing funding delays that can happen during government transitions. They are helping us remain in close contact with the relevant funding agencies and our Congressional representatives to ensure our funding is secure and available in a timely manner.
I am confident that the tribe’s funding will remain fully intact and there will be no interruption of services to our members. Also, a federal judge issued an injunction today that stops the federal funding freeze temporarily until Monday when a court hearing is held.
Together, we will continue to defend our rights, protect our lands, and preserve our culture, no matter the obstacles we may face. Miigwech for listening.
